July 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Dear friend,
How are you?
Hope you’ll keep dry and safe through these rainy days in Austin!

Stay out of rain and join us this Friday for great meal prepared by our chef Cliff and discussion over how to handle conflict in our relationship with others.

This Friday at Wesley House
Dinner will begin at 6:30pm
Cliff will be cooking this Friday, and he’d like to keep the menu a surprise for you! Come see and taste his great cooking :)

Discussion
from 7:30 to 8:30pm
This Friday we will talk about Conflict and how to use it to build our relationship with other people. Please read chapter 6: COMMUNITY IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR: CONFLICT in the book <Everybody’s normal till you get to know them>. Here take a look at some great quotes from this chapter:

Communities need tensions if they are to grow and deepen. Tensions come from conflicts… A tension or difficulty can signal the approach of a new grace of God. But it has to be looked at wisely and humanly.

The greatest crimes against the kingdom of God are crimes against love.

Anger often contains an element of self-righteousness that causes us to want to blame the other person and avoid owning responsibility.

Avoidance kills community. Avoidance causes resentment to fester inside you.

Conflict is inevitable. Resentment is optional.

In conflict, the simplest guideline to reach reconciliation is to approach the other people the way you would want to be approached in their place.

This Friday we will be exploring the concept of EMPATHY. Read chapter 5: THE ART OF READING PEOPLE in the book <Everybody’s normal till you get to know then> before you come if you can.  Take a look at some great quotes from this chapter:

Relational intelligence can be learned. Develop this skill, get it right, and you will have opportunities to influence, comfort, challenge, and love people on a regular basis.
We can live without trying to make sure we control how other people are thinking about us. We can live without winning every argument, without powering up over every decision, without always drawing attention to ourselves.
The most important intimacy-building skill in the world: listening.
Attention is the most valuable currency we have.
One of the hardest things in the world is to be right and not hurt anybody with it...Being fully right rarely brings as much as life to people as simply being human.
You are a guardian of the human spirit. You have the power to manipulate and coerce if you want to. You can avoid and ignore if you choose. But You can also ennoble and inspire.

ISC Friday Night Fellowship: Dinner and Discussion

July 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Dear friend,
It seems the summer just began! As the season gets more and more like a typical Texas summer, why not come chill with us, having a great dinner and conversation on Friday evening?

This Friday at Wesley House
Dinner will begin at 6:30pm
Courtneywill be our chef of the week. Here is the menu:

Raspberry Chipotle Pork Tenderloin
Pasta Salad
Mixed Greens
Brownie

Discussion from 7:30 to 8:30pm
This Friday we will discuss two concepts in our relationship with other people: Acceptance vs. Condemnation. Read chapter 5: Put Down Your Stones: Acceptance in the book <Everybody’s normal till you get to know them> and/or John chapter 8 before you come if you can. Here are some great quotes from this chapter:

Acceptance is an act of the heart. To accept someone is to affirm to them that you think it’s a very good thing they are alive.
Accepting a person is not the same thing as approving all of one’s behavior. Nor is acceptance the same as toleration.
Failure to confront, to speak truth in love, can ultimately be as fatal to the growth of community as judgmentalism.
We can train ourselves to hold people responsible and discuss their failures with them without attacking their worth as human beings or marking them as rejects.

You can borrow (for free) or purchase (6 dollars per copy) the book from us when we meet at Wesley House. To know more about this book, please visit our blog or go to this following Amazon link:

ISC Friday Night Fellowship: No group meeting this week & Update about rock climbing

July 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Dear friend,
Happy 4th July!
Let’s celebrate the blessings we’ve received through this country, no matter where you are from~

Because of some other function Wesley House will have throughout the day, we won’t meet as a big group this Friday. Instead, your small group leaders will inform you if there is any social outing planned out for this coming weekend. Stay turned and check your emails as many times as you’d like!

Also, due to the huge amount of rain we’ve received lately, we think it’s safer to have our rock climbing postponed till later this month. Sorry for the inconvenience! But, hey, we know you will definitely understand that safety should remain as the first priority!

We will meet at Wesley House again next Friday! Hope you’ll have a wonderful 4th July weekend~
